Grand GOP Happenings
It’s Black History Month!
Grand County Republicans, as individuals and as a political party are enthusiastic about February 2025 being designated and proclaimed as Black History Month in our nation. Do you know how this celebration began? In 1975, President Ford (R) issued a Message on the Observance of Black History Week urging all Americans to “recognize the important contribution made to our nation’s life and culture by black citizens.” In 1976 this commemoration of Black history in the United States expanded from a week-long observance to Black History Month when again President Ford issued a Message on the Observance of Black History Month. In 1986, Congress passed Public Law 99-244, which designated February 1986 as “National Black (Afro-American) History Month.” The law further directed the president to issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe February 1986 as Black History Month with the appropriate ceremonies and activities. President Ronald Reagan (R) issued Presidential Proclamation 5443, which proclaimed that “the foremost purpose of Black History Month is “to make all Americans aware of this struggle for freedom and equal opportunity.” This proclamation stated further that this month was a time “to celebrate the many achievements of African Americans in every field from science and the arts to politics and religion.”
We’re also grateful to recognize the February birthdays of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Frederick Douglass.
The Republican Party itself was birthed out of the issue of slavery, that being the signal issue of the day with the Kansas-Nebraska Act erupting into a bloody conflict between Abolitionist settlers and Slave-traffickers. The new political party was formed from many smaller groups and was dedicated to the imperative goal to at last put an expiration date on the legality of owning humans as livestock.
Ongoing compromises by state legislatures, special-interests, and corrupt courts prolonged slavery, leading to a dividing of our nation and parasitically hollowing out its soul. The morally impassioned base of the Republican Party demanded leaders and candidates of action rather than those who would compromise. Seeking visionaries rather than contentious and short-sighted candidates, statesmen like Abraham Lincoln rose in the ranks to solidly, yet fervently, guide the Republican Party and the nation towards this goal. The underlying drive, however, were the Rights bestowed by the Creator upon all persons, and the protections required by God to manifest these upon the representative government established under the Constitution to safeguard and ensure these Rights. This American Constitution (1787-91) affirmed that all people are created equal before God, and as such, it would certainly soon lead to the end of slavery in these United States.
The Republican Party from inception, through rigors of Civil War and Reconstruction, and always has held to the positions of full rights, Citizenship, and inclusion of Black Americans (as well as all racial groups) based upon Constitutional, religious, and moral principles. Our Party has continually resisted a perpetual and unlimited debasement of these tenants via the establishment of mandated quotas, never-sunsetting affirmative action programs, political peer-pressure, and social controls. The expansion and devolution of such legislative measures have ultimately resulted in a spoils system manipulated by opportunists, and race-based preferentialism in government, education, and industry. The resulting hierarchy of outcomes dependent on a subjective template of arbitrarily crafted and artificially elevated regulatory rules (ie, Diversity Equity Inclusion) was being given greater value than simple fairness, performance, efficiency, hard work, and merit.
We Celebrate the recent victories of our Big Tent GOP and the Freedom Coalition that was enabled in large part due to the REPUDIATION of the Biden-Harris Democratic-Authoritarian Coalition by many Black Voters nationwide, who instead voted REPUBLICAN. Black Republicans from 1854-2025 are to be saluted for their patriotism, vision, and great contribution to our nation’s purpose and securing our common future. Anyone holding to traditional American Values and human rights is welcomed. We REJECT stereotyping and malicious slander that is meant to silence and demean people as much as we REJECT relic-minded Klan intimidation and other wrongs perpetrated under Jim Crow Laws, which arose out of the then-Democratic Party controlled southern states.
We recognise that a Third American Religious Awakening and Revival began among southern Black Church congregations in the 1890s and then Azusa Street Los Angeles 1906. Nearly every existing American Christian church organization today and many around the world have benefitted from the emphasis placed on a Biblical life of holiness and passionate service to others. This wave of inspiration was intended for all humanity and led to a seeking of genuine individual Faith and engagement as the best method to address society’s widespread ills, an avenue to help the hopeless, impoverished, and slaves to various addictions.
In spite of resurgent KKK intimidation during the 1920s, Black Americans held firmly to their faith and built strong families and industry. FDR’s New Deal policies assisted masses without work but also sowed the seeds of dependency and entitlement that would sprout decades later. World Wars I and II further demonstrated great service and loyalty of Black American soldiers and workers who served with courage, skill, commitment, and self-sacrifice for the Nation . A postwar period of racial equality, decency and respect under Presidents Truman and Eisenhower ensued and grew into desegregation and the Civil Rights Movement codified into Federal Law to rectify State-sponsored abuses against Black Americans..
Racial tensions flared in the 50’s and 60’s and after, but out of these struggles emerged Martin Luther King Jr., a man that revived those same God-based Rights and values that were enshrined in the Constitution so long ago. His vision of “color-blindness” was and is truly the requirement to make America a great and modern beacon of Liberty.
Today, this month, in 2025 and always, the Grand County GOP honors, acknowledges, and commemorates the vast contributions of Black Americans to our Culture and Our Nation. We celebrate our current roster of passionate Republicans at every level of service to our country who work hard to Lead, to Instruct, to Inspire us all to a better America of Opportunity, a united people who value Faith, Family, and Freedom. Critics, naysayers, and hecklers may choose to hurl insults toward our virtuous cause and the Black men and women who so selflessly live it out, but the Spirit of Strength, Duty, Service, and Vision will not be quenched. We strive for a unified America to ensure that this great and unique country will march onward, arm in arm and with a raised voice declaring that Freedom will ring, We will not allow any Citizen to be made into second class subject, we will not allow any Citizen to be devalued, marginalized, segregated, or disenfranchised from a prosperous and peaceful future. We will firmly hold to human rights bestowed by our Creator-God and the sacred mission to remain One Nation under God. May the God of Divine Providence and Liberty Bless a restored and enlivened America and Bless the multitude of Black Patriots who’ve valiantly pursued the difficult but glorious path to make us a better people and great nation.
