Colorado Super Tuesday 

  5 March 2024

The Colorado Presidential Primary is now scheduled on Super Tuesday 5 March, along with 14 other states. This will be our first Grand County voting event, and mail-in ballots are going out to all registered voters in mid-February. If you are not registered to vote, you can still do so by going to the County Clerk’s Office in Hot Sulphur Springs. You can also try to register online; however, the delays in processing may not allow you to receive a ballot in time. This is a VERY IMPORTANT time to cast your vote, because the future of America is hanging in the balance for the type of government you want to have.

Many thanks to Grand County and Colorado voters who recognized the tax wolf in sheep’s clothing and soundly defeated Proposition HH !!!  Our state legislature must learn how to live within a budget–just like each one of us has to do.  In 2024 Please remember how Governor Polis and the Democratic controlled Legislature tried to use misleading narratives and confusing complexity to trick you.  All TABOR requires is to clearly explain what additional tax revenues are needed for and then ask the voters for their support–a very simple process!

6/15/23 It was just announced in the Judicial Watch Verdict  magazine, June 2023 issue, that the State of Colorado has agreed to settle a Judicial Watch lawsuit from October 2020 on behalf of itself and three Colorado residents, which alleged that the state had failed to clean and update its voter rolls, as required by the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993. The lawsuit alleged that high registration rates and other voter roll metrics showed “an ongoing, systemic problem with Colorado’s voter list maintenance efforts.”

5/26/23  On Friday 5/22 the Colorado Speaker of the House, Julie McCluskie, and State Senator, Dylan Roberts, visited Grand county and participated in several events in Granby.  They participated in a town hall at the Granby Library and summarized the Colorado State Legislature’s accomplishments during the 2023 legislative session. McCluskie sponsored 15 bills which focused on affordable housing, public safety, education, the workforce, environment and healthcare.  Roberts sponsored 44 bills, 11 of which have already been signed into law, focused on agriculture, education, water management, wolf reintroduction, affordable housing and economic growth. They also received a tour of the Warner Field Aviation Museum, attended the Grand county State of the River, and were briefed on current water issues.

4/06/23  On Thursday 4/06 U.S. 2nd District Congressional Representative Joe Neguse visited Grand County, stopping in Kremmling, Granby, Fraser, and Winter Park to meet with Town Managers, as well as Grand County Housing Authority Staff and Grand Fire Protection District personnel. Attendees at the meetings spoke about projects in their respective towns related to affordable housing, economic development, transportation, highway repairs, and fire protection and mitigation issues. Several federal and state funding grants are in work or have been approved. One example is a funding grant  applied for by Grand County EMS for updated equipment and vehicles. Another example is the application of State and Federal funds to support CDOT repair work on the Hwy 40 Red Dirt Hill section between Granby and Tabernash. 3/06/23  At our GCRCC Monday night meeting, Mr. Rich Cimino, our Grand County District 1 County Commissioner, briefed the attendees on the status of 4 new bills before the State Legislature, adding new restrictions on gun ownership in the State of Colorado. These 4 bills are shown below and they are currently in process within the State Legislature. If citizens have concern about these bills or their status, there are links provided in Other News to read the full content of each bill, and then an additional link to contact your senate or house representatives to voice concerns.

2/08/23  It was recently announced that Assistant Town Manager Michael Brack will step into the Fraser Town Manager position effective March 6th. The Fraser Board of Trustees selected Michael Brack for the position after interviewing two other candidates on January 30th. He will replace the current Town Manager Ed Cannon, who is stepping down. The town of Fraser will continue to focus on issues such as economic development, infrastructure investments, water sustainability, and affordable housing. He also plans to promote transparency and improved communications between town residents and town officials. 1/14/23  Our 2nd District Congressman Joe Neguse reported that the end-of-year omnibus spending bill that passed the House & Senate and was signed into law before Christmas contained 14 community projects within the 2nd District that have been funded. One of those projects funded the construction of the Town of Granby Hwy 40 Trail Connection.

12/07/22  Kremmling has hired an interim Police Chief, officer Jesse Lisenby, who assumed duties on 11/21. He is replacing former Police Chief, Hiram Rivera, who left the force in October, because of an impending move. Lisenby had previously served as an officer on the Kremmling police force until 2021.  Currently the town of Kremmling is working with the recruiting firm KRW Associates to create a permanent posting for the police chief position.

11/29/22   Last month residents of Parshall were notified that the Parshall Post Office would be closing effective 11/29, because the lease on the existing P.O. building was being terminated and no suitable new building was available. After 11/29 mail will be picked up and delivered to cluster box units located off U.S. Hwy 40.  Residents who receive delivery at their homes along local rural routes won’t be affected.  Kremmling Post Office will provide postal in-person services and will also provide P.O. Box rental services.

11/15/22   The election results have now been posted for all federal, state, and county election positions, including state amendments, propositions, judges, and local ballot issues. All  nine Grand County positions, including three BOCC positions are now held or have been won by Republican GOP candidates. CONGRATULATIONS to the Grand County GOP for their successful efforts to get-out-the-vote and support our outstanding GOP candidates.

11/08/22   The general election was held on Tuesday 11/08, the county, state and national general election day, without  incident throughout Grand County.

10/31/22  Winter Park Resort Ski Area celebrated its earliest-ever opening day on Halloween Day 10/31. On Tuesday 11/01 the resort’s website listed an 18 inch base with four lifts and three of 166 runs open. Frequent snow storms since then have allowed the ski area to continue to open additional lifts and runs.

10/14/22    The President of the United States visited Colorado on Wednesday 10/12 to formally designate Camp Hale in Eagle County as the newest American National Monument, with the official  title “Camp Hale–Continental Divide National Monument.” This had been the training site for the former 10th Mountain Division, which had been active as ski warriors in the European theater during World War II, and they had conducted mountain snow/ski training in the surrounding Tenmile Mountain range within the White River National Forest.  The President designated 53,804 acres of rugged mountain landscape to be preserved within the monument boundaries for current and future use for outdoor recreational activities and to capture and preserve the natural mountain beauty of Colorado.    SHN 10/14, pg. 16

9/28/22    Fraser Town Manager Ed Cannon on 9/21 during a town board meeting announced his retirement set for 3/31/2023. He cited health issues in his family as the reason for his early retirement. He has served as Fraser town manager since June 2021. As Cannon transitions, he plans to transfer more operational management and oversight to assistant town manager, Michael Brack. He said he would like to assist the town board as they search for his replacement.     SHN 9/28/22 headline

9/14/22        2nd Congressional District Rep. Joe Neguse announced that the US House of Representatives recently passed legislation to ensure fire impacted communities will have resources needed to recover from devastation caused by wildfires. This bipartisan Wildfire Recovery Act would increase flexibility in the federal cost share for Fire Management Assistance Grants (FMAG) to bring in additional resources for communities as they rebuild from wildfire damage. FMAG grants are authorized by FEMA to reimburse the costs of fighting a fire. The grants allow the state to submit receipts for reimbursement of 75% of eligible costs to fight the fires.   SHN 9/16/2022, page 5.
