What is Bullying?
According to Psychology Today’s website, Bullying is defined as:
Bullying is a distinctive pattern of repeatedly and deliberately harming and humiliating others, specifically those who are smaller, weaker, younger or in any way more vulnerable than the bully. The deliberate targeting of those of lesser power is what distinguishes bullying from garden-variety aggression. Bullying can involve verbal attacks (name-calling and making fun of others) as well as physical ones, threats of harm, other forms of intimidation, and deliberate exclusion from activities.
The tendency to bully others seems to have been ingrained in human behavior since the beginning of time. Schools at all levels have taken on the mission to eradicate bullying at school for the past several decades, a noble cause. Therefore, one would think that the more highly educated a person is, the more adverse they would be to bullying others.
However, just the opposite seems to be the case. Today’s highly educated class quite frequently chooses to bully those who hold a social topic opinion that they disagree. The term “cancelling” has even coined to describe purposeful acts of devaluing, demonizing, and discrediting these individuals!
Why is it that a person that uses “cancelling” techniques not a bully? Cancelling actions sure seem to fit the definition of bullying!!
Well, cancellers say they are not bullying when they direct their efforts towards what they define as “hate speech”.
The Psychology Today definition does not exclude any topic, only that the target be “in some way more vulnerable than the bully”. Cancellers that wield massive social media power certainly meet this criteria–do they not?
So next time you encounter a “canceller” in action —call them out as a bully! for that is what they really are!
